Do medical and scientific authorities recognize video game addiction as a real condition?

It depends on the organization, but yes. The WHO folded gaming disorder into the ICD-11 back in 2022, describing it as losing control over gaming, letting it crowd out other parts of life, and sticking with it even when things get bad, going on for a year or more.

The American Psychiatric Association takes a more cautious position. Internet Gaming Disorder appears in the DSM-5-TR under Section III, which covers conditions requiring additional research before receiving formal diagnostic status. The APA proposed nine criteria for researchers studying the condition, including:

Both models agree that just gaming a ton by itself isn't enough to count as a disorder. Doctors look at whether someone can control their gaming and whether it's actually hurting their work, school, relationships, or daily routine.

In these cases, plaintiffs regularly bring up WHO's recognition plus the research to argue compulsive gaming did serious damage, though that recognition by itself doesn't settle the legal liability question.
