Elmiron Claim Eligibility For Injured Consumers

How Elmiron Can Cause You Injuries

The use of Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) has been associated with serious vision problems and eye disorders. Several studies from recent years indicate that Elmiron may increase the risk of blindness or retinal damage, even causing the eyes to continue to deteriorate for years after its use is discontinued.

Elmiron is a drug commonly prescribed for relief of bladder pain associated with interstitial cystitis (IC) — also known as painful bladder syndrome or bladder pain syndrome -, a condition that results in chronic pain and that, currently, has no cure. The more doses taken and years of use, the more likely that vision problems will develop in patients taking Elmiron.

Elmiron Manufacturers

The manufacturer of Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a company founded in 1953, that is headquartered in Beerse, Belgium and owned by Johnson & Johnson.

Elmiron Side Effects that Can Lead to Claims

If you have been diagnosed with an eye disorder after taking Elmiron, you may have a potential claim and the right to recover financial compensation.

We will carefully review your medical records to understand the source of your injury and we will let you know if you qualify for filing a claim. This case consultation happens mostly over the phone, with minimal involvement on your side. This means our process is very efficient and we can determine rapidly if you have a claim for injuries connected with Elmiron.

After studies have linked Elmiron to vision problems, the drug was placed under scrutiny. The vision problems have been described as a novel maculopathy, a condition of the macula, the area in the eye that is responsible for central and detailed vision. This vision-threatening condition sometimes may be diagnosed as:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Macular or pattern dystrophy
  • Maculopathy
  • Retinopathy
  • Degenerative maculopathy
  • Macular retinopathy
  • Retinal pigment epithelium atrophy
  • Scotomas
  • Vision loss
  • Vision impairment
  • Halo vision
  • Unilateral or bilateral blindness

Other studies - one that appeared in Ophthalmology, another from JAMA Ophthalmology, and a study published in the Journal of Urology - found that patients with exposure to Elmiron experienced:

  • Metamorphopsia
  • Blurred vision
  • Prolonged dark adaptation
  • Difficulty reading
  • Difficulty adapting to dim lighting
  • Dark spots on the retina
  • Impaired vision

In Elmiron's labeling, there are no warnings regarding eye problems. The eye condition was discovered when a doctor noticed that several patients presented so-called pattern dystrophy and had a history of taking the drug with a median duration of 16 years.
