Similar to many autoimmune conditions, the exact cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. However, risk factors can increase the risk of developing UC, including exposure to toxic chemicals like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). A study that analyzed at least 300 samples from 75 military personnel with irritable bowel syndrome found that military personnel with higher serum PFAS levels had increased odds of developing Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. They found that increased risk of UC was associated with higher serum PFAS levels, even for patients whose serum levels were measured 10 years before they were diagnosed with UC.
There were several potential mechanisms suggested for how PFAS chemicals can affect the risk of developing ulcerative colitis. In studies of ileal and colonic tissues in mice, exposure to PFOA (a type of PFAS called perfluorooctanoic acid) led to the dysfunction of the intestinal barrier in murine tissue.
If you are a veteran who has been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis after being assigned to a military base contaminated with PFAS, you may be eligible for a PFAS exposure claim and a VA disability claim. Family members of veterans and other civilians who lived near a military base can also file a PFAS exposure claim for ulcerative colitis.
