Why do firefighters face greater risks of developing testicular cancer?

Firefighters are more likely to develop cancers, including testicular cancer, due to occupational exposure to toxic chemicals and known carcinogens.

These include PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), the key ingredient of AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam).

Testicular cancer occurs as a result of abnormal growth of cells in the testes. The cause behind testicular cancer remains unknown, but it has been associated with several risk factors. These include exposure to hazardous industrial substances like PFAS. In fact, several PFAS types, particularly PFOA and PFOS, have the potential to cause cancer.

There had been multiple studies suggesting the prevalence of testicular cancer among firefighters. In 2019, a meta-analysis showed that firefighters face a greater risk of being diagnosed with testicular cancer, at 68 percent.

According to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), occupational cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters worldwide. Here in America, firefighters have a 9 percent increased risk of developing cancer compared to the general population.
