What are the most prevalent thyroid problems linked to PFAS exposure?

Exposure to PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)  has been connected to various thyroid diseases, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Moreover, long-term exposure to PFAS can lead to increased risks of developing thyroid cancer.

Scientific studies have since identified PFAS as an endocrine disruptor, causing harmful effects on hormone-producing organs like the thyroid. PFAS that accumulate within the thyroid gland can disrupt hormone production, alter hormone levels, and even cause damage to the thyroid gland itself.

Research also demonstrates that some PFAS chemicals may affect thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. Accordingly, they may further lead to hypothyroidism (when the thyroid gland produces below-normal levels of hormones) or hyperthyroidism (which produces too many hormones).

Also, any disruption in the thyroid can mean greater risks of thyroid cancer. According to a 2023 study, individuals with high levels of PFOS, a type of PFAS, in their blood have a 56% increased risk of being diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
