PFAS has been linked to different cancers and chronic conditions, and ulcerative colitis is one of the conditions that are strongly linked to PFAS according to scientific studies, including a report by The National Academies.
The National Academies found suggestive evidence that PFAS was associated with an increased risk of ulcerative colitis.
In one study, researchers measured the serum PFAS levels of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease patients. Patients with UC had higher serum levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), while no connection was found for Crohn’s disease patients.
In another study, researchers examined the long-term connection between gastrointestinal conditions and PFAS serum levels measured up to 10 years prior to diagnosis. Among military members with irritable bowel disease, PFAS exposure can increase the risk of developing UC years after exposure.
Our legal team can help military veterans who have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis after PFAS exposure in service. You may be eligible for VA disability claims and PFAS exposure claims, and we can connect you with a specialized attorney who can handle the filing process. If you are related to a veteran or you are a civilian resident, you may also file a PFAS exposure claim for ulcerative colitis if you lived within one mile of a military base for at least a year. If you have more questions about your eligibility or if you are ready to start filing a claim, schedule a consultation with our team.
