National Foam, Inc. is a Kidde-Fenwal Inc. (KFI) brand for advanced fire suppression systems for specialized hazards in industrial and commercial settings. KFI owned National Foam from 2007 to 2013. During this period, the company produced and distributed aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) products that contained "forever chemicals" linked to cancers, exposing military and civilian firefighters to a serious health hazard for decades.
Lawsuits have been piling up against AFFF manufacturers, most of which have been consolidated as Multidistrict Litigation No. 2873 (AFFF Products Liability Litigation) in the District of South Carolina. As of June 2025, there were over 10,000 pending dockets in the AFFF multidistrict litigation (MDL).
The firefighting foam produced by National Foam, Inc. contained per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are synthetic chemicals linked to various cancers and other diseases. Alarmingly, these chemicals persist in the environment for a long time. They can accumulate in the blood and different organs, which puts the health of military and civilian firefighters in danger. Exposure to a type of PFAS called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was linked to an increased risk of kidney cancer and testicular cancer. It was classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Through decades of widespread AFFF use in the United States, National Foam bought PFAS chemicals from third-party suppliers and used them to make firefighting foam products. You may recognize some of these products that were marketed as the following:
The plaintiffs of AFFF litigation allege that PFAS in firefighting foam sold by National Foam and other manufacturers contaminated water supplies and caused personal injuries. Personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits were filed by individuals, including military and civilian firefighters, seeking compensation for costs and medical monitoring expenses. The following are some of the lawsuits and settlements that National Foam, Inc. has been involved in:
If you served as a military or civilian firefighter and worked with AFFF, you may be eligible for a claim if you have been diagnosed with any of the following diseases after your exposure:
If you believe you are eligible for a claim against National Foam, Inc. and other manufacturers, Ataxia Law can help you get started. We only need to verify your military records (for military firefighters) or employment records (for civilian firefighters), as well as medical documents that show a diagnosis of any condition mentioned above.
