Paraquat is often sold under the brand name of Blanco in the United States

The manufacturer of Blanco, which contains 43.2% paraquat dichloride, the active ingredient in this herbicide, is Altitude Crop Innovations, LLC. Unlike other products that have paraquat as the main ingredient, Blanco does not require users to keep it away from sunlight, flames, and sparks and it can even be frozen. It is a group D herbicide, which means that Blanco is a microtubule assembly inhibitor. Microtubule assembly inhibitors are herbicides that are usually applied to control annual grasses and weeds.

They are absorbed by both the roots and the shoots of emerging seedlings but do not immediately move from one place to another within the seeds of weeds and grasses. Group D herbicides are poisons that prevent cell division. Consequently, they affect the growing points of stems and roots of weeds and grasses.

It is worthy of note that Blanco is a restricted use pesticide, which means that only people who underwent specific training provided by the Environmental Protection Agency can use it.

The majority of applicators of Blanco are agricultural workers, as this herbicide is not designed for residential use due to the high toxicity it has.

Blanco is very effective for weed and grass control in numerous crops, including:

  • soybean
  • eggplant
  • pepper
  • tomato
  • lentil
  • guar
  • cotton
  • asparagus
  • rice
  • pineapple
  • sugarcane
  • potato
  • alfalfa
  • sugarbeet
  • barley
  • wheat
  • guava
  • corn
  • safflower
  • sunflower
  • almond

People who are licensed applicators of Blanco are required to wear adequate protective equipment during the entire time they mix, load, or use the herbicide, which includes:

  • coveralls
  • protective eyewear
  • chemical-resistant gloves
  • butyl rubber, nitrile rubber
  • neoprene rubber
  • natural rubber
  • polyethylene
  • polyvinyl chloride or viton
  • shoes and socks
  • chemical resistant aprons
  • NIOSH-approved particulate filtering respirator equipped with N, R or P class filter media

Due to the acute toxicity of Blanco, it cannot be used by individuals who are not trained in this respect even under the supervision of certified applicators.

Blanco exposure and Parkinson's disease

It is important to know that using or being around paraquat products such as Blanco increases the risk of developing Parkinson's disease by 250%. For this reason, if one of your family members worked with or was around Blanco, you should pay close attention to their health and look out for symptoms such as:

  • slowness of movement
  • tremor in the hands, legs, jaw, or head
  • stiffness of the limbs and trunk
  • impaired balance and coordination

People who developed Parkinson's disease as a consequence of paraquat exposure are eligible for compensation from the responsible company. However, because misdiagnosis is, unfortunately, a frequent occurrence when it comes to Parkinson's disease, you should also encourage your family member to seek a second and even a third opinion if they experience these symptoms but do not receive this diagnosis during their first medical appointment.
