PFOS and PFHxS exposure linked to increased risk of cancer in the urinary system

The evidence linking per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to serious health issues keeps growing.

A recent study found that exposure to certain PFAS compounds may increase the risk of developing several types of cancer, including those that affect the urinary system.

PFAS refers to over 15K man-made chemicals known for their unique properties. They can resist heat and repel oil and water, making them highly useful. However, the persistent nature of PFAS chemicals has raised concerns regarding their impact on the environment as well as human health.

The most commonly studied PFAS types are as follows:

  • Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)
  • Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)
  • Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS)
  • Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)

Studies linking PFOS and PFHxS to urinary system cancers

Recently, a 2025 study published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology found a connection between exposure to certain types of PFAS and an increased risk of developing cancers of the urinary system. Analyzing data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute from 2016 to 2021, researchers suggested that constant exposure to PFOS and PFHxS increases the risk of developing several forms of cancer among males. These include cancers of the urinary system, such as bladder cancer and kidney cancer.

PFOS and PFHxS can accumulate in the kidneys and bladders over time. As a result, they may disrupt cellular function, hormone regulation, and lead to DNA mutation, all of which can further result in cancer.

PFOS and PFHxS: The potential to cause cancer

The International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization classified PFOS as a Group 2B carcinogen, which means it recognized this chemical as a 'potential carcinogen' to humans based on current scientific findings and literature. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) Program is conducting a toxicity assessment for PFHxS, along with other PFAS types. It will also help determine if PFHxS has the potential to cause cancer.

File a PFAS toxic exposure claim with the help of Atraxia Law

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with bladder cancer or kidney cancer and suspects long-term exposure to PFAS as the cause, you may be entitled to compensation. It can help you cover:

  • Medical expenses (including treatment, surgery, and other operations, medications)
  • Lost income (including future loss of wages due to disability)
  • Pain and suffering (the emotional and mental damage the cancer has caused)

That's why we recommend consulting with Atraxia Law today. Our skillful team can help determine if you're eligible to file toxic exposure claims. Simply provide us with evidence, such as:

  • Medical records indicate cancers in the urinary system.
  • Military records for active and retired service members diagnosed with urinary cancers who may have been routinely exposed to PFAS.
  • Other relevant documents, such as proof of residency for relatives living inside or those residing within a mile of a contaminated army base.

If you qualify, you can rely on us to connect you with an experienced lawyer to represent your case and ultimately secure the compensation you deserve.
