Once they've made contact, predators gain trust through gameplay, offering virtual gifts purchased with Robux, and engaging in conversations that seem friendly and safe.

The grooming process usually follows a familiar pattern. Predators take days or weeks establishing relationships with children through game interactions and messages. They slowly work in inappropriate topics, ask for personal information, and attempt to shift the conversation to platforms like Discord, Snapchat, or Instagram, where Roblox's moderation systems can't see what's happening.

Once the conversation moves to external platforms, exploitation usually escalates fast. Predators start asking for sexually explicit photos or videos, engage in sextortion by threatening to share images with the child's family or friends, or try to set up meetings in person. Some children end up with severe trauma, anxiety, depression, or thoughts of suicide as a result.

Eligibility criteria for filing a claim

Roblox safety failures alleged in lawsuits

• Inadequate age verification: Roblox depends mainly on birthdates that users report themselves, which children and adults can lie about easily. This lets adults create fake accounts as minors and access parts of the platform intended for children.
• Insufficient chat and message moderation: Despite having automated filters and AI systems, predators often circumvent moderation by using code words, misspellings, or shifting conversations off-platform before exchanging explicit material.
• Easy migration to external platforms: The platform doesn't do enough to stop or warn about users sharing contact information for Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, or phone numbers, where exploitation gets worse beyond Roblox's ability to monitor.
• Delayed or inadequate response to reports: Families report that safety complaints submitted to Roblox often receive slow responses or no meaningful action, allowing reported predators to remain active and continue targeting children.
• Lack of parental warnings: Roblox markets itself as a safe platform for children without adequately revealing the known risks of predatory contact that have resulted in thousands of reports of exploitation.

Current litigation against Roblox

Over 119 lawsuits across 34 states have been filed by families claiming Roblox didn't protect children from sexual exploitation. These cases got consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL 3166) in the Northern District of California under Chief Judge Richard Seeborg, which allows for coordinated discovery into Roblox's internal safety practices and what the company knew about predatory activity.

State attorneys general have also gotten involved. In October 2025, Kentucky's Attorney General brought a lawsuit claiming Roblox allowed child exploitation through predatory games and incentives using Robux. Louisiana's Attorney General filed similar claims in August 2025. Texas's Attorney General has accused Roblox of misleading parents about how safe the platform is while functioning as a "common nuisance" by allowing child exploitation.

Multiple courts have rejected Roblox's efforts to force families into private arbitration, ruling that sexual abuse claims involving minors are outside the scope of enforceable arbitration provisions. These rulings let cases move forward in public courts where families can access broader discovery of Roblox's internal documents, safety reports, and executive communications.
