Camp Lejeune kidney cancer claims

Even though kidney cancer is often the result of high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity, it can also be caused by drinking toxic water at military bases such as Camp Lejeune. During the last century, the drinking water at the military base was heavily contaminated with volatile organic compounds, exposure to which promotes the development of kidney cancer, among other serious diseases.

Veterans who spent time at Camp Lejeune have a 35% greater risk of developing kidney cancer. Both perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene are carcinogenic to humans. Exposure to the former is correlated with kidney cancer, whereas exposure to the latter has a definitive association with the disease. Once inside the body, trichloroethylene might cause renal toxicity if present in large amounts, which is a risk factor for kidney cancer.

In 2009, the National Research Council reviewed the scientific evidence on the link between renal toxicity and trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene exposure at Camp Lejeune. The report included a comprehensive examination of human and animal studies on the renal toxicity caused by exposure to these solvents. According to the results, chronic exposure to trichloroethylene in mice results in the following, which are associated with kidney cancer:

  • molecular changes
  • kidney damage
  • cellular changes
