Camp Lejeune pancreatic cancer claims

Over 64,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every year across the country. The prognosis of this disease is grim, as 42% of individuals with localized pancreatic cancer and 11% of patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer will live for five years or longer. While some of the risk factors for pancreatic cancer are smoking, obesity, diabetes, and pancreatitis, it has recently come to light that toxic water exposure at Camp Lejeune during the last century can also cause this disease.

The lifetime risk of getting pancreatic cancer is 1 in 64, but for Camp Lejeune veterans and family members, the risk is significantly higher, as they were exposed to a concoction of harmful chemicals. For instance, exposure to industrial solvents was found to have a strong association with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, a form of pancreatic cancer.

Exposure to benzene is a major risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Furthermore, the following toxic agents, some of which were lurking in the drinking water at Camp Lejeune, may also promote the development of pancreatic cancer:

  • pesticides
  • certain dyes
  • petrochemicals
  • carbon tetrachloride
  • trichloroethylene
  • methyl chloride

Although the mechanisms by which industrial solvent exposure triggers pancreatic cancer are not fully understood at the moment, researchers believe they may reach the pancreas through the blood or refluxed bile and subsequently damage the organ. Moreover, benzene exposure was correlated with a higher frequency of K-ras mutations in pancreatic tumors, and a high benzene concentration was also found in bile aspirates of pancreatic cancer patients than in those with benign conditions.
